Flexibility for the Modern Farm

In the dynamic world of large-scale agriculture, asset utilization is key. Many farmers in regions with fragmented land holdings, such as parts of Europe, Argentina, and the US Midwest, utilize Towable Center Pivot Systems. These irrigation machines are designed to irrigate one field, then be towed by a tractor to an adjacent field to repeat the cycle. This “One Machine, Multiple Fields” strategy drastically reduces capital investment but places unique demands on the drivetrain.

A standard irrigation gearbox uses a high-ratio worm gear (50:1) which is self-locking. You cannot tow it; the wheels will skid, or the internal gears will shatter. The solution is the Towable Agricultural Wheel Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão Rebocável). This specialized unit features an integrated mechanism—usually a lever, a pin, or a sliding collar—that physically disengages the worm shaft from the bull gear. This puts the gearbox into “Neutral” or “Free-Wheel” mode, allowing the heavy towers to be towed freely without internal resistance.

EVER-POWER’s TW-Series (Towable Wheel) gearboxes are the benchmark for this application. We have engineered a robust disengagement system that seals out dirt even when the lever is actuated. Unlike cheaper designs where the neutral position can slip back into gear during towing (causing catastrophic failure), our Positive Lock-Out ensures the gears remain separated until the operator intentionally re-engages them for irrigation duty.

Engineering the “Free-Wheel” Mode

1. The Disengagement Mechanism

The core of a towable gearbox is how it disconnects the drive. There are two main designs:

A) Sliding Hub: The output shaft itself slides axially, disengaging splines inside the gearbox. This is robust but requires lifting the wheel to shift.

B) Disengaging Worm (Preferred): A lever moves the worm gear assembly slightly away from the bull gear, or disengages the input shaft from the worm via an internal dog clutch. EVER-POWER utilizes the Internal Dog Clutch Design. This allows the worm gear to remain meshed (keeping it lubricated), while the input shaft spins freely. The lever is easy to operate even when the tire is under load.

2. The Sealing Challenge

Introducing a moving shift lever into an oil-filled housing creates a major leak point. Dust and water love to enter through the shifter mechanism. We solved this with a Triple-Seal Shifter Housing. The shift rod is protected by an external rubber boot, an internal O-ring, and a scraper seal. This ensures that even if the external boot is torn by corn stalks, the internal integrity of the oil bath is maintained.

3. Positive Lock Detent

The most dangerous scenario for a towable gearbox is “Partial Engagement.” If the gearbox vibrates back into gear while being towed at 15 mph, the shock load will instantly shatter the worm shaft or explode the housing. Our TW-Series features a Spring-Loaded Ball Detent with Safety Pin. The lever physically clicks into “Tow” or “Drive” positions and must be secured with a steel cotter pin. This physical lockout prevents accidental re-engagement during transport.

4. Towing Durability

When towing, the bull gear spins rapidly (driven by the wheels). Even though it’s not under load, it creates turbulence in the oil. We redesigned the internal oil channels to ensure that in “Tow Mode,” the upper bearings receive adequate splash lubrication. We also use Premium Tapered Roller Bearings that can withstand the high-speed rotation and heat generation typical of towing a 5-ton pivot across a 100-acre field.

Comparative Analysis: Towable Gearbox vs. Manual Hub Disconnect

Feature Towable Gearbox (TW Series) Manual Hub Disconnect (External)
Convenience High (Flip a lever) Low (Remove bolts/pin)
Seal Integrity High (Fully Sealed) Medium (Cap removal exposes hub)
Time per Tower 30 Seconds 5-10 Minutes
Strength Medium (Internal complexity) High (Solid internal gear)
Cost Higher Lower (Uses standard gearbox)

Localized Application: Global Agriculture

Multi-Crop Farms (Argentina)

In Argentina’s pampas, farmers often rotate pivot systems between wheat and soy fields to maximize ROI. Towable gearboxes allow a single 500m pivot to service two or three center points. The reliability of the Disengagement Lever is critical, as these machines are moved monthly during the growing season.

Linear Move Systems (Europe)

Linear move irrigators often need to be repositioned or towed back to the start of the field. Towable gearboxes are standard equipment here. Our TW-52 with a bronze gear option is preferred for these high-duty-cycle machines, providing the wear resistance needed for frequent travel and towing operations.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Exploding” Gearbox

“September 2025, Kansas. A farm manager towed a 7-tower pivot from the north field to the south field. Halfway there, the tower #3 gearbox exploded, locking the wheel and snapping the tow cable.”

“Investigation revealed the operator had flipped the lever but forgot to insert the safety pin. Vibrations caused the lever to bounce back into ‘Drive’ at 15 mph. The engagement shock at that speed was catastrophic.

Solution: We replaced the units with our TW-50 Safety-Lock Series. This updated design features a ‘Push-to-Turn’ knob that requires two distinct motions to engage, and a high-tension internal spring that forces the lever to stay in the selected detent. It is physically impossible for vibration to shift gears. We also added bright red/green indicators for Tow/Drive status to aid visual inspection.”

Frequently Asked Questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Can I use a towable gearbox on a fixed pivot?

Yes, you can. It will function perfectly. However, you are paying for a feature (towing capability) you don’t need, and introducing a potential failure point (the shifter seal). For permanent installations, we recommend our NT (Non-Towable) series for maximum reliability and lower cost.

2. What is the max towing speed?

Even in “Free Wheel” mode, we recommend towing at no more than 20 mph (32 km/h). Higher speeds generate excessive heat in the bearings and oil, and increase the risk of seal damage. Remember, agricultural tires are not balanced for highway speeds.

3. Are these compatible with UMC towable hubs?

Yes. Our TW-Series is a direct replacement for UMC 740-U-AD and TNT series towable gearboxes. The mounting bolt pattern, shaft height, and input shaft size are identical. You can mix and match on the same pivot if the ratio (50:1) is the same.

4. How do I know if it’s in “Tow” mode?

Our gearboxes have a clear label near the lever. Usually, the lever perpendicular to the shaft is “Drive” and parallel is “Tow”. Always verify by trying to rotate the input shaft by hand. If the input spins freely without moving the wheel, it is disengaged. If the wheel spins without turning the input, it is in Tow mode.
