In the Southern states of Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina), small-scale family farming relies heavily on high-value crops like Tobacco (Fumo) and Cassava (Mandioca). These crops require raised soil beds to ensure drainage and root expansion. The Rotary Ridge Plough (Encanteirador Rotativo) is the machine of choice. Unlike passive disc ridgers, the rotary ridger uses active power to pulverize the soil and throw it upwards into a perfect trapezoidal shape.

El Ridge Plough Gearbox is a specialized high-speed transmission. It must take the standard 540 RPM from the tractor and increase it to 300-400 RPM at the rotor shaft to create the centrifugal force needed to shape the bed. This “Speed Increaser” function generates significant internal heat and load.

Engineering the “Active Ridger”

1. The Lateral Thrust Solution

In a rotary ridger, the blades cut the soil and throw it laterally inwards to form the bed. This creates a significant Axial Thrust Load on the output shafts, pushing them back into the gearbox housing. Standard snap-ring retainers can fail under this load. EVER-POWER uses a Threaded Bearing Pre-Load Nut system. This mechanically locks the output bearings against the housing shoulder, preventing any axial movement of the shaft, ensuring gear mesh stability.

2. Speed Increasing Thermal Management

To pulverize soil finely for vegetable seeds, the rotor must spin fast (400 RPM). The gearbox acts as a speed increaser. This generates more heat than a reducer. Our housing design features “Turbulence Fins” inside the casting that agitate the oil, preventing stagnant hot spots. We also use high-temp FKM seals as standard to handle operating temperatures up to 110°C during continuous summer operation.

3. The Dust-Proof Labyrinth

Tobacco fields in dry seasons are clouds of fine, abrasive dust. This dust can destroy a lip seal in days. We employ a Dual-Stage Sealing System: An external steel labyrinth shield (slinger) that physically repels dirt, protecting the internal Cassette Seal. The cassette seal itself contains multiple sealing lips and integrated grease, providing a final barrier against micro-particles.

4. Versatile Mounting Geometry

Different crops require different bed widths. Manufacturers need flexibility. Our gearboxes feature a Universal Mounting Flange with multiple bolt patterns. The output shafts can be customized (Hex, Round, or Spline) to fit various rotor tube diameters. We also offer extended output shafts for “Wide-Bed” vegetable formers used in melon and pumpkin farming.

Tobacco seedlings are delicate. They require a high, well-drained bed free of clods. 1. Can I change the rotation direction of the output shafts?

Yes. By moving the crown gear to the opposite side of the pinion shaft during assembly, we can reverse the rotation direction. Standard rotation is typically “top-in” to pull soil towards the center of the bed.

2. Do you offer a gearbox with a through-shaft for multiple rows?

Yes, our RP-Series T-boxes are available with a Through-Shaft (Passante) configuration. This allows you to chain multiple gearboxes together to build a 2-row, 3-row, or 4-row bed former machine driven by a single PTO input.

3. What is the maximum recommended rotor diameter?

For our standard RP-50 gearbox, we recommend a max rotor diameter of 500mm. For larger high-bed cassava ridgers (600-700mm rotors), we recommend upgrading to the RP-80 Heavy Duty series to handle the increased leverage torque.

4. Can this gearbox handle rocky soil?

While the gears are hardened, we strongly recommend using a Slip Clutch (Embreagem de Disco) on the PTO shaft when working in rocky terrain. The gearbox is shock-load rated, but a direct rock strike at 400 RPM can still exceed the breaking limit of steel without a safety clutch.
