The Heart of the Hose Reel

In the realm of mechanized agriculture, the Hard Hose Traveler (Hose Reel Machine) stands as one of the most versatile and widely used irrigation solutions globally. Unlike center pivots which require permanent infrastructure, travelers are mobile and adaptable. The core technology that enables this mobility is the Turbine Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão da Turbina). This sophisticated component acts as both an engine and a transmission, converting the kinetic energy of pressurized water into the mechanical torque needed to retract hundreds of meters of heavy polyethylene (PE) hose.

Le Irrigation Turbine Gearbox represents a masterpiece of fluid dynamics and mechanical engineering. It typically consists of an axial or radial flow aluminum turbine impeller housed in a volute, directly coupled to a multi-stage reduction gearbox. As water rushes through the system, a percentage is diverted through the turbine, spinning it at high RPM (often 1000+ RPM). The gearbox then steps this speed down drastically—typically to an output of less than 1 RPM—to drive the hose reel drum with massive torque.

EVER-POWER's TG-Series (Turbine Gear) units are engineered to maximize efficiency. In irrigation, pressure loss is the enemy. An inefficient turbine robs the sprinkler gun of throw distance. Our designs utilize Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) optimized impellers and low-friction ceramic seals to extract maximum power with minimal pressure drop (as low as 0.3 bar), ensuring that your pump’s energy goes to the crop, not just to the machine.

Engineering the “Fluid Drive”

1. The Variable Speed Bypass

A hose reel must maintain a constant retraction speed to ensure uniform water application. However, as the reel fills with hose, the diameter increases, which would naturally increase the retraction speed if the RPM stayed constant. Furthermore, farmers need to adjust speed based on crop needs (slow for heavy watering, fast for light misting). Our turbine features an integrated Bypass Valve controlled by a computer or mechanical linkage. By diverting more or less water around the turbine, we precisely control the impeller speed, decoupling the irrigation flow rate from the retraction speed.

2. Axial vs. Radial Impellers

Turbine efficiency is dictated by the impeller design. For high-volume, low-pressure systems, we use Axial Flow turbines (propeller style) which offer minimal resistance. For high-pressure systems requiring massive torque, we use Radial Flow (Pelton or Francis style) impellers. EVER-POWER utilizes a hybrid aluminum impeller cast with specific blade angles to minimize cavitation and resist the abrasion of sandy water, extending the lifespan significantly over plastic alternatives.

3. The Multi-Speed Gearbox

A single turbine speed isn’t enough. As the hose drags through mud, the load increases. Our TG-Series includes a 3 or 4-Speed Manual Gearbox built into the unit. Similar to a tractor transmission, this allows the operator to select a gear range: Low Gear for high torque (heavy mud/long hose), and High Gear for fast retraction (light watering/short hose). This mechanical advantage prevents the turbine from stalling under load.

4. PTO Emergency Rewind

If the water pump fails or the hose gets stuck, the machine is stranded in the field. Every EVER-POWER turbine gearbox includes a standard PTO Shaft Input. This allows a tractor to connect via a cardan shaft and mechanically rewind the hose reel, bypassing the water turbine. This safety feature is critical for recovering equipment before storms or for winter storage.

Application localisée : Agriculture mondiale

Europe (France/Italy)

The home of the Hose Reel. European farmers value energy efficiency above all due to high diesel prices for pumps. Our Low-Pressure Loss Turbines are the standard here, allowing farmers to run pumps at lower RPMs while still achieving the required retraction torque for 125mm hoses.

Americas (USA/Brazil)

In the vast fields of the Midwest and Brazil, “Hard Hose Travelers” often serve irregular fields where pivots can’t reach. Durability is key. Our Cast Iron Gearboxes withstand the rough transport across furrows and the heavy shock loads when the sprinkler cart hits a rut or mud hole.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Stalled” Reel

“July 2025, Parma, Idaho. An alfalfa grower reported his traveler stopped retracting halfway through the run. The pump was running fine.”

“We opened the turbine inspection port (a key feature of our design). A small river stone had lodged between the impeller blade and the housing, jamming it. Because our TG-Series uses a Belt Drive between the turbine shaft and the gearbox input, the belt simply slipped, protecting the expensive gears and turbine blades from shattering.

Solution: We removed the stone in 5 minutes, tensioned the belt, and the machine was back running. Had this been a direct-drive gear system, the impeller shaft would have sheared.”

Foire aux questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Can I retrofit this to a Comer or Ocmis machine?

Yes. Our TG-Series is designed with universal mounting flanges. We offer adapter plates to match the bolt patterns of major European brands like Comer, Ocmis, and Bauer. The input and output shaft positions are adjustable.

2. Does it handle sandy water?

Standard aluminum impellers can wear out in abrasive water. For sandy conditions, we recommend our Hard-Coated Anodized Impeller or the polymer option. The mechanical ceramic seal on the turbine shaft is specifically designed to exclude grit from the bearings.

3. How do I change gears?

You must stop the water flow (or declutch the turbine) to stop the input shaft rotation. Then, use the external shift lever to select the desired gear range (1-4). Never shift gears while the turbine is spinning under load.

4. What is the minimum pressure required?

Our high-efficiency turbines can operate with as little as 3.5 bar (50 PSI) inlet pressure, depending on the hose diameter and length. Lower pressures may require using the lowest gear ratio to maintain torque.
