Driving the Heavy Harvest

In the potato belts of Brazil, specifically in the municipalities of Vargem Grande do Sul (SP) and Perdizes (MG), the harvest window is critical. Modern potato harvesters (Arrancadores de Batata) are complex machines that must dig, lift, sieve, and separate tons of soil and tubers per hour. The Main Drive Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão Principal) acts as the central distribution hub for this entire operation.

This gearbox receives 540 or 1000 RPM from the tractor PTO and splits the power to drive hydraulic pumps (for steering and sorting tables) and mechanical shafts (for the digging web and elevator chains). The load profile is extreme: constant high torque to pull the sieving webs through heavy clay soil, punctuated by shock loads when stones jam the rollers.

Engineering the “Dual-Path” Power

1. The Hydraulic Pump Integration

Modern potato harvesters are electro-hydraulic. The cleaning rollers, sorting belts, and bunker elevators are driven by hydraulic motors. The main gearbox must therefore act as a pump drive. EVER-POWER gearboxes feature an integrated SAE B or SAE C Flange Output. This allows the main hydraulic pump to be mounted directly to the gearbox, eliminating the need for external belts or separate cardan shafts, reducing vibration and saving space.

2. The Heavy Web Drive

The main sieving web (Esteira) carries tons of soil. Starting this heavy mass requires immense torque. We utilize Spiral Bevel Gears with a 30° Helix Angle. This aggressive angle ensures more teeth are in contact simultaneously, providing the shear strength needed to start the web under full load without stripping gear teeth. The output shafts are splined (DIN 5480) to prevent the fretting wear common with keyed shafts.

3. Dust & Soil Sealing

Harvesting happens in dry, dusty conditions (creating fine silica dust) or wet, muddy conditions. Both are fatal to bearings. We employ a “Gamma Ring” + “Viton Lip” dual seal system. The external Gamma Ring acts as a centrifugal slinger, deflecting heavy mud and wire. The internal Viton seal handles the oil retention and resists the heat generated by 12-hour shifts.

4. Overload Protection Geometry

When a large stone enters the digging unit, the shock travels instantly to the gearbox. To protect the expensive gears, our input shaft is designed with a specific Shear-Groove. In a catastrophic jam event (>4500 Nm), the input shaft is engineered to shear cleanly outside the housing, saving the internal gears and allowing for a quick, low-cost field repair.

Winter Harvest (Vargem Grande do Sul)
