Driving the Heavy Harvest

In the potato belts of Brazil, specifically in the municipalities of Vargem Grande do Sul (SP) and Perdizes (MG), the harvest window is critical. Modern potato harvesters (Arrancadores de Batata) are complex machines that must dig, lift, sieve, and separate tons of soil and tubers per hour. The Main Drive Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão Principal) acts as the central distribution hub for this entire operation.
This gearbox receives 540 or 1000 RPM from the tractor PTO and splits the power to drive hydraulic pumps (for steering and sorting tables) and mechanical shafts (for the digging web and elevator chains). The load profile is extreme: constant high torque to pull the sieving webs through heavy clay soil, punctuated by shock loads when stones jam the rollers.
EVER-POWER's MD-Series (Main Drive) gearboxes are engineered with a “Load-Sharing” internal geometry. We utilize oversized spherical roller bearings to handle the radial loads of heavy belt pulleys and a reinforced cast iron housing that resists the twisting forces of the harvester frame on uneven terrain.

Engineering the “Dual-Path” Power
1. The Hydraulic Pump Integration
Modern potato harvesters are electro-hydraulic. The cleaning rollers, sorting belts, and bunker elevators are driven by hydraulic motors. The main gearbox must therefore act as a pump drive. EVER-POWER gearboxes feature an integrated SAE B or SAE C Flange Output. This allows the main hydraulic pump to be mounted directly to the gearbox, eliminating the need for external belts or separate cardan shafts, reducing vibration and saving space.
2. The Heavy Web Drive
The main sieving web (Esteira) carries tons of soil. Starting this heavy mass requires immense torque. We utilize Spiral Bevel Gears with a 30° Helix Angle. This aggressive angle ensures more teeth are in contact simultaneously, providing the shear strength needed to start the web under full load without stripping gear teeth. The output shafts are splined (DIN 5480) to prevent the fretting wear common with keyed shafts.
3. Dust & Soil Sealing
Harvesting happens in dry, dusty conditions (creating fine silica dust) or wet, muddy conditions. Both are fatal to bearings. We employ a “Gamma Ring” + “Viton Lip” dual seal system. The external Gamma Ring acts as a centrifugal slinger, deflecting heavy mud and wire. The internal Viton seal handles the oil retention and resists the heat generated by 12-hour shifts.
4. Overload Protection Geometry
When a large stone enters the digging unit, the shock travels instantly to the gearbox. To protect the expensive gears, our input shaft is designed with a specific Shear-Groove. In a catastrophic jam event (>4500 Nm), the input shaft is engineered to shear cleanly outside the housing, saving the internal gears and allowing for a quick, low-cost field repair.

Winter Harvest (Vargem Grande do Sul)
Harvesting happens in dry, dusty conditions. Gearbox breathing is a major issue. As the box heats up, it pushes air out. When it cools at night, it sucks dusty air in. We equip our MD-Series with High-Flow Sintered Bronze Breathers that filter particles down to 10 microns, keeping the oil clean and extending seal life.
Wet Season (Paraná)
In wet clay, the torque required to pull the web increases by 40%. The gearbox must operate at peak torque for hours. Our High-Capacity Oil Sump (5 Liters) ensures that even under full load, the oil temperature remains stable, preventing viscosity breakdown and gear scuffing.
📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Screaming” Gearbox
“August 2025, Araxá, MG. A large potato grower reported a high-pitched whine coming from their main harvester gearbox. We inspected it. The backlash on the input bevel gear had increased to 0.8mm (spec is 0.15mm).”
“The cause was ‘Shim Compression’. The low-quality shims used by the previous supplier had flattened under the axial thrust load, allowing the gears to separate.
Solution: We rebuilt the box using Hardened Ground Shims and pre-loaded the tapered bearings to a rolling torque of 2 Nm. We also switched to a synthetic ISO VG 220 oil. The gearbox went back into service silent and ran for the next 2,000 hectares without adjustment.”

Perguntas frequentes (OEM/B2B)
1. Can this gearbox drive two hydraulic pumps?
Standard MD-Series boxes have one pump output. However, we offer a “Dual-Output” adapter plate that allows mounting tandem pumps or two separate pumps, essential for modern harvesters with complex separation tables.
2. Is the output shaft hollow or solid?
We offer both. The Eixo oco option allows the gearbox to slide directly onto the harvester’s main drive shaft, simplifying installation. The Eixo Maciço option is for coupling connections. Both are hardened 40Cr steel.
3. Are replacement parts compatible with Grimme gearboxes?
Our MD-Series is designed as a functional replacement for many OEM boxes (e.g., Comer, Bondioli) used on Grimme and AVR machines. While internal gears may differ, the mounting footprint and shaft heights are often identical for drop-in replacement.
4. What is the max angle for the input PTO shaft?
For standard operation, we recommend keeping the angle under 15 degrees. For tighter turns at headlands, a Wide-Angle (CV) PTO Shaft is mandatory to prevent vibration damage to the gearbox input bearings.
