The Speed Multiplier: Engineering for Inertia
In the Brazilian agricultural landscape, “Green Manure” management and crop residue processing are vital for soil health. The Flail Mower (Triturador) 和 Forestry Mulcher (Broca Florestal) rely on a rotor spinning at incredibly high speeds (2,000 to 2,500 RPM) to pulverize biomass. Unlike rotavators that reduce speed, the Right-Angle Gearbox on a flail mower acts as a Speed Multiplier (Multiplicador de Velocidade).
This application presents two unique engineering challenges: High Inertia 和 Vibration Resonance. When the tractor PTO is disengaged, the heavy rotor wants to keep spinning. Without a protection mechanism, this inertia would drive the power back into the tractor transmission, causing catastrophic damage. Standard industrial gearboxes cannot handle this “back-driving” force.

Engineering the “Free-Wheel” Architecture
1. Internal vs. External Clutch
Traditional mowers use an external free-wheel clutch mounted on the PTO cardan shaft. However, this adds length, vibration, and cost. EVER-POWER integrates the clutch inside the gearbox input shaft. This “Internal RL” design keeps the center of gravity closer to the machine frame, reducing cantilever stress and vibration. It also protects the delicate sprag mechanism from dust and rain inside the oil-sealed housing.
2. High-Speed Output Shaft Stability
The output shaft drives the belt pulley at speeds over 2000 RPM. Any runout or imbalance at this speed destroys belts instantly. We use Through-Hardened 40Cr Steel shafts, precision ground to h6 tolerance. The bearing journals are supported by reinforced ribs in the casting to prevent shaft deflection under the high radial tension of the V-belts.
3. Thermal Management at High RPM
High speed means high oil churning. Foam generation is a major risk. Our gears act as a centrifugal pump. We designed a specific “Oil Catchment Gallery” inside the casing that captures splashing oil and channels it directly to the upper bearings, ensuring lubrication without submerging the gears too deep (which causes drag and heat). We recommend low-foaming synthetic oils for mulcher applications.
4. Vibration Damping Casting
Mulchers operating in coffee plantations often hit old stumps. The vibration spectrum is violent. A standard grey iron housing can crack. We use Nodular Cast Iron (QT450) which has graphite nodules that arrest crack propagation. The mounting feet are 20% thicker than standard to prevent the bolts from loosening due to harmonic vibration.

“January 2025, Franca, SP. An OEM customer reported that V-belts were overheating and snapping every 50 hours on their new flail mower line. They blamed the belt supplier. We investigated and aimed a thermal camera at the gearbox output shaft.”
“The shaft temp was 130°C! The heat was transferring to the pulley and cooking the rubber belts. The cause was Oil Overfilling. The customer filled the box to the top, causing massive churning friction at 2500 RPM.
Solution: We redesigned the dipstick with a clearer ‘High Speed Level’ mark (which is lower than standard). We also switched the output seal to a Viton lip with a heat shield. Once the oil level was corrected, shaft temp dropped to 80°C, and belt life returned to normal.”

1. Why does the gearbox have an arrow on the input shaft?
Gearboxes with integrated Free-Wheels (RL) are directional. They will only drive in one rotation (usually CW). If you run the PTO in reverse, the clutch will freewheel, and the rotor won’t spin. The arrow indicates the required PTO rotation.
2. Can I mount the gearbox upside down?
No. The internal oil galleries are designed for gravity feed to the bearings in a specific orientation. Also, the breather plug must be at the top. If you need to change rotation, ask for our ‘Inverter’ series, do not flip the box.
3. What is the difference between RL and RLD?
RL stands for ‘Ruota Libera’ (Free Wheel). RLD implies a dual-direction capability or specific heavy-duty sprag internal geometry. Our standard is the heavy-duty RL suitable for rotors up to 800kg inertia.
4. Do I need a friction clutch on the PTO shaft if the box has a free wheel?
The free wheel only protects against coasting inertia. It does not protect against overload strikes. If you are mulching in rocky terrain, you absolutely still need a Friction Clutch or Shear Bolt on the PTO shaft to protect against sudden jams.
