Powering the Hydraulic Nervous System

In the precision agriculture of hybrid seed corn production (“Milho Semente”), the Corn Detasseler (Despendoadora) is a unique machine. Unlike a standard tractor that uses a mechanical transmission, a modern detasseler is essentially a mobile hydraulic power plant. Every function—from the 4WD hydrostatic wheel motors to the high-speed cutter bars and the lift cylinders—is driven by hydraulic fluid.

The critical link between the diesel engine (typically 100-200 HP) and this complex hydraulic network is the Pump Drive Gearbox (Caixa de Distribuição de Bombas). Also known as a “Pump Splitter,” this gearbox mounts directly to the engine’s flywheel housing. Its job is to take the single rotary input from the crankshaft and split it into two, three, or even four separate outputs (pads) to drive multiple hydraulic pumps simultaneously.

EVER-POWER’s PD-Series (Pump Drive) gearboxes are the backbone of Brazilian seed production fleets. Engineered to SAE standards, they allow manufacturers to mount a large hydrostatic pump for traction alongside smaller gear pumps for auxiliary functions (steering, cutting), all in a compact, vibration-damped package designed to survive the heat and dust of the “Safrinha” harvest.

Engineering the “Hydraulic Split”

1. Direct Engine Coupling

The PD-Series gearbox eliminates the need for belts, pulleys, or cardan shafts. It bolts directly to the diesel engine’s bell housing (SAE 1-3). The input shaft connects to the engine flywheel via a specialized Torsional Damping Coupling. This polymer or rubber element absorbs the harsh firing pulses of the diesel engine, protecting the precision gears of the gearbox and the sensitive pistons of the hydraulic pumps from vibration damage.

2. Modular Pump Pads

Versatility is key. A detasseler might need one huge hydrostatic pump for the wheels and two smaller gear pumps for the cutters. Our gearboxes feature modular output pads. We supply adapter plates that allow you to mount any combination of SAE A, B, C, or D pumps. This flexibility means OEMs can use a Danfoss pump for traction and a Parker pump for steering on the same gearbox, optimizing component selection.

3. Speed Increasing Ratios

Diesel engines typically run at 2200 RPM, but many compact hydraulic pumps are most efficient at higher speeds. Our gearboxes are often Speed Increasers (Multiplicadores). A 1:1.2 ratio boosts the 2200 input RPM to 2640 RPM at the pumps. This allows for higher hydraulic flow rates using smaller, lighter pumps, reducing the overall weight of the machine and increasing the speed of the cutter bars.

4. Internal Lubrication Circuit

Splitting 300 HP generates heat. While splash lubrication works for simpler boxes, our heavy-duty models feature an internal oil circulation system. The rotating gears pump oil through channels to the upper bearings (which would otherwise run dry during startup). For extreme applications, we include ports to connect an external oil cooler, ensuring the gearbox temperature never exceeds 90°C even in the blistering heat of Mato Grosso.

Comparative Analysis: Pump Drive Gearbox vs. Belt Drive

Feature Pump Drive Gearbox (PD Series) Belt & Pulley System
Efficiency High (98% – No Slip) Medium (Slippage losses)
Compactness High (Direct Mount) Low (Requires large guards)
Maintenance Low (Oil Change) High (Belt Tension/Replace)
Capacity Unlimited (Up to 1000 HP) Limited (Belt strength)
Safety Fully Enclosed Exposed Rotating Parts

Localized Application: Brazil Agri-Business

Seed Production (Goiás/Minas)

In the seed corn capital of Paracatu, uptime is critical. The detasseling window is less than a week. A broken belt shuts down a machine for hours. Our Direct Drive Gearboxes eliminate belt failures entirely. The ability to mount a backup steering pump on the auxiliary pad adds redundancy, ensuring the machine can always return to the shed.

Sugar Cane Harvesters (SP)

Beyond corn, these same gearboxes drive the hydraulics on sugar cane harvesters. The constant vibration of harvesting requires a Cast Iron Housing (unlike the aluminum used in lighter machinery) to prevent fatigue cracking at the mounting flange. Our PD-Series is built with heavy-wall castings specifically for this purpose.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Chattering” Coupling

“October 2025, Rio Verde, GO. A manufacturer of self-propelled sprayers reported that the input shafts on their pump drives were shearing off after 200 hours.”

“We analyzed the failure. The surfaces showed torsional fatigue. The diesel engine was running at low RPM often, creating high torsional vibration. They were using a rigid steel drive plate.

Solution: We replaced the rigid plate with a High-Damping Elastomeric Coupling between the flywheel and the gearbox input. This rubber-encased coupling absorbed the engine firing pulses before they reached the gearbox shaft. The ‘chatter’ disappeared, and the shaft failures stopped immediately.”

Frequently Asked Questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Can I mount a Danfoss H1 pump?

Yes. The Danfoss H1 typically uses an SAE C or D mount with a 14-tooth or 13-tooth spline. Our PD-Series gearboxes are modular; we simply install the correct SAE flange adapter and spline sleeve to match your specific pump model.

2. Do I need to support the pumps?

It depends on the weight. Small gear pumps are supported by the gearbox flange alone. However, large heavy hydrostatic pumps (50kg+) hanging off the back can cause leverage stress. We recommend a rear support bracket for any pump exceeding 40kg to prevent flange cracking.

3. What is the max input torque?

Our PD-Series is rated up to 1,500 Nm input torque. If your engine produces more than this (e.g., a 300HP+ unit), you must ensure the load is distributed or choose our “Heavy Duty” dual-input line. Always check the application factor.

4. Can I run the gearbox upside down?

Yes, 180-degree rotation is possible, but you must swap the breather and drain plug positions. The breather must always be at the highest point to prevent oil expulsion. Please consult our engineering team for inverted mounting instructions.
