Winterizing the Serra Gaúcha

In the renowned wine-growing regions of Southern Brazil, particularly in the Serra Gaúcha and Campanha Gaúcha, winter frosts pose a significant threat to young vine grafts. The technique of “Vine Burying” (Enterramento da Videira) is a critical agronomic practice used to insulate the vines under a mound of soil. The machine that performs this task is a specialized type of rotary hiller or side-delivery tiller.

The effectiveness of this machine relies entirely on the Soil Throwing Rotor Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão do Rolo Lançador). Unlike a standard rotavator that merely mixes the soil in place, the vine burying gearbox must spin the rotor at high velocities (typically 300 to 450 RPM) to create enough kinetic energy to throw the pulverized earth laterally, covering the vines laid flat on the adjacent row.

EVER-POWER’s ST-Series (Soil Thrower) gearboxes are engineered for this specific high-speed, high-load application. Positioned usually as a side-drive unit or a central splitter, they feature High-Ratio Speed Increasers and reinforced output bearings to handle the cantilevered load of the throwing rotor, ensuring a uniform soil cover even in heavy, wet clay conditions.

Engineering the “Earth Launcher”

1. Speed Increaser Dynamics

To throw soil effectively over a distance of 1-2 meters, the rotor tip speed must be significantly higher than a standard tiller. Standard tillers run at ~220 RPM. A vine burying rotor needs 350-500 RPM. Our ST-Series gearboxes are designed with an internal gear ratio (e.g., 1:1.9) that multiplies the 540 PTO input. This high speed creates the centrifugal force necessary to eject the soil from the rotor blades and form a high, compact mound over the vines.

2. Side-Drive Resilience

To achieve a clean throw without obstruction, the gearbox is often mounted on the side (lateral transmission) or drives a side chain case. This places the gearbox directly in the “line of fire” of flying rocks and debris. We manufacture our housings from Ductile Iron (QT450), which has superior impact resistance compared to standard grey iron. The housing walls are thickened at impact points to prevent cracking if a large stone is thrown against the case.

3. Submerged Sealing Technology

Vineyards in Southern Brazil can be extremely wet during the burying season. The lower part of the gearbox or the bearing housing often operates submerged in liquid mud. We utilize advanced Cassette Seals. Unlike standard lip seals, a cassette seal has its own internal running surface and multiple dirt-exclusion lips. This prevents the seal from grooving the shaft and keeps the abrasive silica mud out of the oil bath, extending bearing life by 300%.

4. Reversibility Option

While the primary job is burying, the same machine is often used to unearth the vines in spring. This requires reversing the rotor direction. Our ST-Series gearboxes can be configured with an internal Mechanical Reverser (optional) or are designed to be essentially symmetrical, allowing the input rotation to be reversed via the tractor (if equipped) or by flipping the gearbox mounting, providing year-round utility.

Comparative Analysis: Speed Increaser vs. Standard Gearbox

Output RPM High (350-500) Low (180-220)
Action Throws Soil (Ballistic) Mixes Soil (In-place)
Torque Load Medium (High Speed) High (Low Speed)
Covering Ability Excellent (Thick mound) Poor (Flat bed)
Cost Medium Low

Localized Application: Brazil Agri-Business

Serra Gaúcha (Vineyards)

The rocky, basaltic soil of the Serra Gaúcha is tough on machinery. Vine burying happens in late autumn when the soil can be wet and heavy. Our ST-Series gearboxes are built with Oversized Spiral Bevel Gears to handle the shock loads when the high-speed rotor hits a hidden rock, preventing tooth breakage that would leave the vines exposed to frost.

Multi-Function Use

Many farmers use the same machine chassis for burying vines in winter and hilling potatoes or tobacco in summer. Our gearboxes are designed with Universal Mounting Patterns and standardized spline shafts, allowing them to be easily adapted or replaced on multi-purpose toolbars commonly manufactured in Caxias do Sul.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Weak Throw” Mystery

“May 2025, Flores da Cunha, RS. A winemaker complained that his new burying machine wasn’t covering the vines completely. The soil mound was too low, leaving the canes exposed to frost.”

“We checked the machine. The OEM had installed a standard 1:1 ratio tiller gearbox instead of the specified speed increaser. The rotor was spinning at only 200 RPM—too slow to throw the heavy clay soil.

Solution: We swapped it for our ST-50 High-Speed Gearbox (1:1.9 Ratio). This boosted the rotor speed to nearly 400 RPM. The difference was immediate. The machine threw a dense, high arc of soil, completely burying the vines with a 30cm protective layer. The farmer was relieved, as a frost was forecast for that week.”

Frequently Asked Questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Can I use a standard tiller gearbox?

No. Standard tiller boxes are reducers (slow down the speed). Vine burying requires a Speed Increaser to generate the centrifugal force needed to throw soil. Using a reducer will result in soil just tumbling over the rotor without forming a mound.

2. Does it come with oil?

For shipping safety, units are shipped dry. You must fill them with SAE 85W-140 Gear Oil before use. The high viscosity is crucial for protecting the gears under the high-shock loads of rocky vineyard soil.

3. What if I hit a big rock?

The gearbox itself is robust, but you MUST use a Friction Slip Clutch on the PTO shaft. This is the primary safety device. The gearbox is designed to withstand momentary shocks, but a solid lock-up without a clutch will destroy any transmission.

4. Is the output shaft hex or round?

We offer both. However, for vine burying machines, we strongly recommend a Hexagonal Output Shaft (50mm). Hex shafts transmit torque more effectively without the stress concentrations of keyways, which often shear under the heavy cyclic loads of soil throwing.
