Winterizing the Vineyard: The Critical Role of Transmission

In viticulture regions subject to harsh winters, such as the Serra Gaúcha in Brazil or the northern latitudes of China and Europe, the survival of grapevines depends on the technique of “Vine Burying” (Enterramento de Videiras). This process involves laying the vine canes on the ground and covering them with a thick layer of soil to insulate them from freezing temperatures. The machine responsible for this is the Vine Burying Machine (Máquina de Enterrar Vinha), essentially a specialized rotary tiller or auger system.

The mechanical challenge here is unique. The machine must often throw soil with high velocity to cover the vines (Winter mode) but may also need to gently remove soil in the Spring (Unearthing mode). Furthermore, working in loose, sandy soil versus wet, heavy clay presents the risk of rotor jamming.
