Winterizing the Vineyard: The Critical Role of Transmission

In viticulture regions subject to harsh winters, such as the Serra Gaúcha in Brazil or the northern latitudes of China and Europe, the survival of grapevines depends on the technique of “Vine Burying” (Enterramento de Videiras). This process involves laying the vine canes on the ground and covering them with a thick layer of soil to insulate them from freezing temperatures. The machine responsible for this is the Vine Burying Machine (Máquina de Enterrar Vinha), essentially a specialized rotary tiller or auger system.

The mechanical challenge here is unique. The machine must often throw soil with high velocity to cover the vines (Winter mode) but may also need to gently remove soil in the Spring (Unearthing mode). Furthermore, working in loose, sandy soil versus wet, heavy clay presents the risk of rotor jamming. To address these needs, the Reversing Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão com Reversão) is the industry standard.

EVER-POWER's RV-Series (Reversing Vine) gearboxes provide a robust mechanical solution to change the rotation direction of the output shaft instantly. By utilizing a heavy-duty sliding collar mechanism, operators can switch between “Forward” (Soil Throwing), “Neutral” (Safe Transport), and “Reverse” (Jam Clearing / Unearthing) without decoupling the PTO shaft. This versatility transforms a single-purpose implement into a year-round vineyard management tool.

Engineering the “Instant Reversal”

1. The Triple-Bevel Architecture

A standard gearbox has one pinion and one ring gear. Our reversing gearbox contains Three Bevel Gears: one input pinion and two opposing output gears spinning freely on the cross shaft. A central sliding clutch (dog collar) is keyed to the shaft between these two gears. When the lever is moved, the collar locks onto either the left or right gear, determining the rotation direction. This design allows for robust power transmission in both directions with equal efficiency.

2. Jam Clearing Capability

Vine burying machines work deep in the soil, often encountering large roots, rocks, or balls of old vine canes. These can jam the auger or tiller rotor instantly. With a fixed gearbox, clearing this requires manual labor or digging. With the RV-Series Reverser, the operator simply disengages the PTO, shifts to “Reverse,” and re-engages power gently. The reversed rotation spits out the obstruction, clearing the machine in seconds.

3. Soil Throwing Dynamics

The physics of burying vines relies on trajectory. By changing the rotation direction, the machine can either throw soil over the vines (burying mode) or pull soil away from the vines (unearthing mode). Our gearbox allows a single implement to perform both tasks simply by changing the gear lever position and adjusting the rear deflector shields, saving the farmer the cost of buying two separate machines.

4. Sealed Shifting Mechanism

The gear shift lever enters the housing through the top or side. In the dusty environment of a vineyard, this is a potential entry point for grit. EVER-POWER utilizes a Rubber Booted Shift Rod with internal O-ring seals. The detent mechanism (ball and spring) is located inside the oil bath, ensuring crisp, positive shifts (click-click) that won’t vibrate out of gear during operation, even after years of use.

Comparative Analysis: Reversing vs. Fixed Gearbox

Fonctionnalité Reversing Gearbox (RV Series) Standard Fixed Gearbox
Fonctionnalité Dual-Mode (Bury/Unearth) Single Mode
Jam Clearing Instant (Reverse Gear) Manual (Crowbar required)
Versatilité High (One machine, two jobs) Faible
Sécurité High (Neutral position) Medium (Rotor always live)
Coût Moyen Faible

Serra Gaúcha (Vineyards)

In the hilly vineyards of Rio Grande do Sul, the soil is often rocky and clay-heavy. Vine burying machines must operate on slopes. Our RV-Series gearboxes are equipped with Deep Oil Sumps to ensure the upper bearings remain lubricated even when the machine is tilted at 20 degrees, preventing starvation and premature failure during uphill burying operations.

Multi-Crop Usage (South)

Farmers in the South often rotate crops. The same reversing gearbox used for vine burying can be repurposed for Post-Hole Diggers (reversing to clear the auger) or Fertilizer Spreaders. The standardized mounting pattern allows for modular implement design, maximizing the farmer’s investment in quality drivetrain components.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Stuck” Rotor

“June 2025, Caxias do Sul, RS. A vineyard owner called us in frustration. His vine burying machine had hit a large basalt rock and jammed solid. The slip clutch was smoking, but the rock wouldn’t budge.”

“He was using an older fixed-rotation gearbox. They spent 3 hours digging the rock out by hand.

Solution: We retrofitted the machine with our RV-60 Reversing Gearbox. Two weeks later, he hit another rock. This time, he simply declutched the PTO, shifted the lever to ‘Reverse’, and engaged the PTO at low RPM. The auger backed off the rock instantly. He cleared the obstacle and resumed work in under 2 minutes. He ordered three more units for his neighbors the next day.”

Foire aux questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Can I shift gears while under load?

Non. The shifting mechanism is a mechanical dog clutch. You must stop the PTO rotation completely before changing direction. Shifting while rotating will grind the gears and can snap the shift fork. Always bring the machine to a halt and idle the engine before shifting.

2. Does it have a neutral position?

Yes. The shift pattern is typically Forward – Neutral – Reverse. The Neutral position is very useful for testing the tractor PTO or transporting the machine without the rotor spinning, adding an extra layer of safety.

3. Is the torque output the same in both directions?

Yes. Due to the symmetrical bevel gear layout (unlike worm gears), the torque capacity and efficiency are identical in both forward and reverse. You can operate at full power in either direction.

4. Can I use this for a Post Hole Digger?

Absolutely. A reversing gearbox is a premium upgrade for post hole diggers. If the auger screws itself into a root or hard clay and gets stuck, the reverse gear allows you to back it out effortlessly, preventing the need to dig it out by hand.
