The Most Complex Gearbox in Agriculture

Cotton picking is a mechanical ballet. Unlike grain harvesting which relies on brute force threshing, picking cotton requires delicate synchronization. The Picking Unit (Row Unit) must insert thousands of rotating barbed spindles into the cotton boll, spin them to wrap the fiber, withdraw them, and then strip the cotton off—all while the machine is moving forward at 4-5 mph. This entire sequence is orchestrated by the Picking Unit Gearbox (Caixa de Transmissão da Unidade de Colheita).

This isn’t a simple speed reducer. It is a multi-output transmission tower. A single gearbox must drive two distinct systems: the Spindle Drums (front and rear) and the Doffer Columns. Crucially, the rotational speed of the drums must be perfectly synchronized with the ground speed of the harvester. If the spindles move backward relative to the unit slower than the machine moves forward, they will drag the plant down. If they move faster, they will tear the bush out. This synchronization is often managed by a variable speed hydrostatic drive feeding into our precision fixed-ratio gearbox.

EVER-POWER's PU-Series (Picking Unit) gearboxes are engineered to replace OEM units on major platforms like John Deere PRO-Series and Case IH Cotton Express. We utilize High-Grade Nodular Iron housings to maintain gear alignment under the immense thermal stress of friction generated by thousands of spinning spindles. Our gears are shaved, ground, and heat-treated to ensure the timing between the picker bars and the doffer pads remains accurate to within a fraction of a degree, preventing costly mechanical collisions.

Engineering the “Pick & Doff” Cycle

1. The Dual-Path Power Flow

Inside the picking unit gearbox, the power splits into two distinct paths. The High-Speed Path drives the doffer columns. These rubber-padded discs spin very fast (2000+ RPM) to wipe the cotton off the spindles. The High-Torque Path drives the main picker drums. These drums rotate slowly (100 RPM) but carry the heavy picker bars. The gearbox must maintain a precise ratio between these two. If the doffer lags, cotton wraps around the spindles (a “wrap”), jamming the unit. Our gear design ensures zero backlash between these critical components.

2. The Cam Track Interface

The gearbox doesn’t just spin the drum; it supports the complex cam track mechanism. Inside the drum, picker bars must pivot to position the spindles correctly (picking zone vs. doffing zone). This creates a pulsing, rhythmic load on the gearbox output shaft. We reinforce the bottom output bearing housing with extra ribbing to absorb the radial shock load generated every time the cam followers transition from the picking curve to the doffing curve.

3. Contamination Control

Cotton harvest is dirty. “Sap” from the plant mixes with dust to form a sticky, grinding paste. If this enters the gearbox, it destroys bearings. EVER-POWER utilizes a Triple-Barrier Seal System on the lower output shafts. This includes a metal labyrinth shield (flinger), a felt dust seal, and a high-pressure inner oil seal. This defense prevents the “cotton candy” buildup on the shaft from forcing its way into the oil sump.

4. Overload Protection

Picking units frequently encounter rocks, stumps, or large wads of green material. To prevent the entire geartrain from exploding, we integrate Radial Pin Slip Clutches on the main input and the doffer drive shafts. These clutches are designed to “chatter” audibly when slipping, alerting the operator to a jam. The internal spring tension is calibrated to hold during heavy picking but release instantly upon solid impact, protecting the expensive internal gears.

Comparative Analysis: Gearbox vs. Chain Drive vs. Belt

Fonctionnalité Enclosed Gearbox (PU Series) Transmission par chaîne et pignon Belt Drive System

*Modern high-speed pickers (PRO-16, CP690) exclusively use gearboxes due to fire safety and timing requirements.

Application localisée : Ceintures mondiales de coton

West Texas / Arizona (USA)

In arid, dusty conditions, abrasive sand wear is the enemy. Our gearboxes for this region feature Hardened Output Shafts and upgraded external dust shields. The seals are specifically chosen to resist the “grinding paste” formed by fine sand and spindle grease.

Mato Grosso (Brazil)

High-yield, tall cotton varieties require aggressive picking units. The load on the doffer drive is significantly higher due to the volume of fiber. We supply High-Torque Doffer Gears for this market, with wider gear faces to transmit more power without tooth pitting.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Clicking” Drum

“November 2025, Lubbock, Texas. A farmer reported a rhythmic clicking noise from the #3 row unit on his 6-row picker. The spindles were also hesitating.”

“We drained the gearbox oil and found glitter—metal shavings. Upon disassembly, we discovered the lower drum drive gear had lost a tooth. The cause? The farmer had been running with a bent picker bar for weeks. The bent bar was binding against the cam track every rotation, sending a shock load back into the gearbox.

Solution: We installed a new EVER-POWER PU-Pro Gearbox. We also replaced the bent picker bar and adjusted the cam track clearance. We emphasized to the operator: ‘The gearbox is the fuse. If you hear clicking, stop immediately, or a $50 bar problem becomes a $2000 gearbox problem.'”

Foire aux questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Why is timing so critical?

The doffer pads must pass between the spindles at the exact moment the spindle is positioned to release the cotton. If the timing is off by even a few degrees, the doffer will hit the metal spindle instead of the cotton. This causes rapid wear on the pads and can bend the spindles.

2. Can I use standard gear oil?

We recommend a specialized Cotton Picker Spindle Grease (00) or a high-grade 80W-90 Gear Oil depending on the model generation. Modern high-speed units often use liquid oil for better cooling. Using grease in an oil unit will cause overheating and bearing failure.

3. Do you sell the gears separately?

Yes. We offer complete Rebuild Kits containing the input bevel gears, drum drive gears, bearings, and seals. However, rebuilding a picking unit gearbox requires precise shimming to set the backlash. For most users, swapping the complete assembly is more cost-effective.

4. Is this compatible with the John Deere CP690?

Yes. Our PU-Series includes the specific “Pro-16” and “Pro-12” gearbox configurations used on the latest round-bale cotton pickers (CP690/CP770). We match the mounting points and the hydraulic drive interface perfectly.
