In the intensive agricultural zones of Brazil, effective water management is the difference between a bumper crop and root rot. The Rotary Ditcher (Valetadeira Rotativa) is the primary tool used to create irrigation channels in sugar cane fields and drainage ditches in rice paddies. Unlike a passive plow, the rotary ditcher uses a large milling wheel spinning at high velocity to cut soil and throw it clear of the trench.

This operation places extreme demands on the Rotary Ditcher Gearbox. It must transmit high horsepower (often 80HP to 160HP) to accelerate heavy, wet clay to throwing speeds. The gearbox faces a unique combination of loads: the continuous torque required to cut the soil, and the violent shock loads when the cutting blades strike stones or submerged timber. Engineering the “Earth Mover”

1. The Cantilever Load Challenge

In a typical single-wheel ditcher, the cutting wheel hangs off the side of the gearbox. This creates a massive Overhung Load (Cantilever Moment). A standard gearbox output shaft would bend or snap. EVER-POWER utilizes an oversized output shaft (up to 70mm diameter) forged from 40CrNiMo steel. We support this shaft with widely spaced double tapered roller bearings to maximize the leverage ratio and resist bending forces.

2. Speed Increaser vs. Reducer

Ditchers need high rotor tip speed to throw soil far from the trench. This often requires the gearbox to act as a Speed Increaser (1:1.5 Ratio), taking 540 RPM input and outputting ~800 RPM. This is thermally demanding. Our gearboxes are designed with specific internal oil channels to ensure lubricant reaches the high-speed pinion bearings even when the oil viscosity drops due to heat.

3. The “Mud-Submarine” Sealing

Ditchers often work below the water table. If water enters the gearbox, the oil emulsifies, and bearings fail within hours. We employ a Sceau de cassette system. This unitized seal has its own internal running surface, so groove wear on the shaft doesn’t cause leaks. Additionally, we install a greasable external labyrinth chamber that purges dirt outwards, creating a physical barrier against mud ingress.

4. Impact Energy Management

When a ditcher blade hits a large rock, the kinetic energy of the heavy flywheel rotor tries to shear the gear teeth. We use Engrenages coniques à spirale with a high contact ratio (multiple teeth engaged at once) to distribute this shock load. The gears are precision-lapped to ensure 85%+ contact area, reducing the point-loading that leads to tooth fracture.

Sugar Cane Irrigation (Northeast Brazil)

Maintaining drainage in wet rice fields requires gearboxes that can survive being splashed with mud and water daily. Our RD-Series features a Raised Breather Snorkel option. This elevates the breather vent 30cm above the gearbox housing, preventing water ingestion even if the gearbox itself is momentarily submerged in a flooded ditch.

1. Can I use this gearbox for a vertical axis ditcher?

Yes, our RD-Series is designed with bearing lubrication paths that function correctly in a vertical output orientation. However, you must specify ‘Vertical Mount’ when ordering so we can install the correct sealed bearings at the top position to prevent oil starvation during startup.

2. What is the maximum recommended wheel diameter?

For our standard RD-100 box, we recommend a maximum cutting wheel diameter of 1.2 meters. Larger wheels create leverage forces that exceed the bearing load rating. For larger wheels, please inquire about our Heavy-Duty RD-150 series.

3. Do you supply the safety slip clutch?

We highly recommend using a PTO shaft with an integrated Friction Slip Clutch. While the gearbox gears are hardened, a solid rock strike can create torque spikes of 5000Nm+. A clutch is the only way to safeguard the internal gearing.

4. What grease should be used for the output seal labyrinth?

We recommend a water-resistant Lithium Complex grease (NLGI 2). The labyrinth should be purged with fresh grease daily to push out any accumulated dirt or moisture.
