The Clearance Challenge in Tall Crops

In the specific agronomy of Brazil’s “Cana-de-Açúcar” (Sugarcane) and late-stage corn cultivation, standard top-driven tillers face a significant limitation: clearance. A central gearbox placed directly over the row creates a vertical obstruction that can damage taller plants. To solve this, manufacturers utilize Side Drive Gearboxes (Caixas de Transmissão Lateral). These units shift the drive mechanism to the extreme side of the row unit, often using a chain or gear drop box, allowing the main frame to sit much higher.

De Side Drive Row Unit is composed of a top bevel box (converting hex-shaft rotation) connected to a vertical “Drop Box” (Caixa de Descida) containing a chain or gear train that drives the rotor shaft at the bottom. This architecture creates a “U” shape or “Portal” frame, providing the necessary tunnel clearance for cultivating ridged crops or ratoon cane without breaking stalks.

EVER-POWER's SD-Series (Side Drive) systems are engineered for this specific geometry. We combine a compact upper bevel gear set with a rugged, slim-profile lateral chain case. This design ensures that the transmission itself fits within the narrow inter-row spacing (often < 50cm) while delivering the torque required to chop heavy trash residue (palha) found in conservation tillage systems.

Engineering the “Vertical Drop”

1. The Slim Profile Advantage

In narrow row crops like 45cm soy or cotton, the physical width of the gearbox is critical. A bulky chain case will act as a bulldozer, damaging the crop roots and stems. EVER-POWER utilizes high-tensile Simplex High-Performance Chains (ASA 80H) running on hardened sprockets. This allows us to keep the chain case width under 100mm, ensuring it passes cleanly between rows while transmitting up to 30HP per unit.

2. Gear Drive vs. Chain Drive Drop

We offer both options. Chain Drop is lighter and cheaper, ideal for general tillage. Gear Drop (using a train of 3-4 spur gears) is heavier but maintenance-free and stronger. For Sugarcane cultivation in São Paulo, where the soil is often compacted and rocky, we recommend the All-Gear Side Drive to eliminate the risk of chain stretch or breakage during deep ridging.

3. Duo-Cone Seals for Submerged Operation

The lower bearing housing of the side drive operates below the soil line, effectively submerged in abrasive dirt. Conventional rubber seals groove the shaft within weeks. We install Duo-Cone (Floating Face) Seals on the output hub. These metal ring seals are lapped to optical flatness, preventing any ingress of silica sand or wire, ensuring the oil bath remains uncontaminated.

4. Integrated Chain Tensioner

Chain drives stretch over time. A loose chain causes “slap” which wears through the casing. Our SD-Series features an Automatic Spring-Loaded Tensioner made from wear-resistant UHMWPE polymer. This device maintains constant pressure on the slack side of the chain, compensating for wear and dampening vibration without requiring manual adjustment.

System Comparison: Side Drive vs. Center Drive Row Units

Functie Side Drive (SD Series) Center Drive (Top Gearbox)
Gewasopruiming High (Unobstructed center) Low (Gearbox hits tall plants)
Trash Flow Excellent (Open frame) Poor (Gets clogged)
Profile Width Very Narrow (Chain case) Medium (Bevel box)
Onderhoud Medium (Chain tension) Low (All gear)
Kosten Higher (More components) Lager

Sugarcane Ridging (Sulcos)

Sugarcane is planted in deep furrows. The cultivator must reshape these ridges while mechanically weeding the sides. The High-Clearance Side Drive allows the row unit to straddle the tall ridge without the gearbox dragging on the soil, preserving the ridge shape and reducing fuel consumption.

Tobacco Hilling (Sul)

Tobacco plants are extremely fragile. Cultivators must hill soil around the base of the plant (“Chegar Terra”). Side drive units with Adjustable Drop Angles allow the rotors to work at an angle, throwing soil perfectly onto the bed without the transmission case damaging the valuable lower leaves.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Slapping” Chain

“December 2025, Ribeirão Preto. A fleet of sugarcane cultivators was suffering from frequent chain case failures. The steel cases were wearing through from the inside.”

“The machines were running at high speed over rough ratoon ground. The vibration caused the chains to whip violently (‘chain slap’), cutting into the housing wall. The manual tensioners had vibrated loose.

Solution: We retrofitted the units with our SD-40 Heavy Duty Side Drive featuring a cast iron chain case (instead of fabricated steel) and a spring-loaded automatic tensioner. The cast iron dampened the vibration, and the auto-tensioner kept the chain controlled. Case wear was eliminated, and chain life doubled.”

Veelgestelde vragen (OEM/B2B)

1. Chain vs. Gear Side Drive: Which is better?

For rocky soil, Chain Drive is preferred as it absorbs shock loads. For abrasive sandy soil or heavy clay without rocks, Gear Drive is superior as it is fully sealed and maintenance-free (no stretching). Gear drives are more expensive.

2. Can I adjust the depth of the row unit?

Yes, depth is controlled by the gauge wheel on the row unit frame. However, the Side Drive Gearbox length (drop height) determines the maximum possible clearance. We offer Short (400mm) and Long (700mm) drop versions.

3. Do you sell the hex shaft input gears?

Yes, the top input box features a hex-bore bevel gear. We stock replacement gears for 41mm and 50mm hex shafts, which are the standard sizes for Brazilian cultivators (DMB, Baldan, etc.).

4. Is the chain case oil-filled?

Yes, it is designed for an oil bath. However, many farmers prefer using Semi-Fluid Grease (NLGI 00). This grease coats the chain well, leaks less if a seal is damaged, and handles the vertical operation better than thin oil.
