The Control Center of Modern Agriculture

In the precision world of Micro-Irrigation (Drip and Micro-Sprinkler), water quality is paramount. The emitters that deliver water to the crop root zone have microscopic orifices that clog easily. Therefore, the Headworks (Cabeçal de Controle)—the central station containing filtration, pressure regulation, and metering—is the most critical component of the entire hydraulic network.

Unlike flood irrigation which relies on gravity, micro-irrigation relies on technology. Within the headworks, two primary systems utilize specialized Agricultural Gearboxes: the Automatic Self-Cleaning Filter and the Fertigation Injection Pump.

1. Filtration Drives: Modern screen filters utilize an electric motor coupled to a reduction gearbox to rotate a suction scanner or brush assembly. This mechanism cleans the screen continuously without interrupting water flow.

2. Dosing Pump Drives: To inject precise amounts of fertilizer (fertigation) or acid (chemigation), heavy-duty metering pumps use eccentric gearboxes to convert rotary motor motion into linear piston strokes, ensuring exact nutrient delivery.

EVER-POWER’s HW-Series (HeadWorks) gearboxes are engineered for these specific stationary applications. Unlike wheel drives exposed to mud, these units are often housed in pump sheds or exposed to chemical fumes. We utilize Chemical Resistant Coatings and Sealed Worm Gear designs to provide the reliability required for 24/7 irrigation cycles.

Engineering the “Cleaning Cycle”

1. The Suction Scanner Drive

In a self-cleaning screen filter, a hollow tube with nozzles (the scanner) spirals inside the screen to suck off dirt cake. This requires a gearbox that can provide Helical Motion. The HW-Series gearbox rotates the scanner shaft slowly (15-20 RPM). Simultaneously, a hydraulic piston moves the scanner axially. The gearbox must handle the axial thrust load generated by the pressure differential (often 5-8 bar) pushing against the scanner shaft while maintaining smooth rotation.

2. DC Motor Integration

Many headworks are in remote fields powered by solar panels or batteries. Therefore, the gearbox must accept 12V or 24V DC Motors. We provide compact worm gearboxes (Sizes 30, 40, 50) with integrated DC motor flanges. These units are designed for intermittent duty (cleaning cycles last only 10-20 seconds) but must provide high starting torque to break the friction of a dirty, calcified screen.

3. Chemical Resistance (Fertigation)

Fertilizer injection pumps (e.g., piston pumps) operate in a corrosive cloud of nitric acid, phosphoric acid, and dissolved salts. A standard aluminum gearbox will corrode and seize. Our Pump Drive Gearboxes feature Epoxy-Coated Cast Iron Housings and stainless steel output shafts. The seals are upgraded to Viton (FKM) to resist chemical attack if any fluid drips onto the shaft. We also offer fully enclosed “Washdown” units for food-safe processing environments.

4. Variable Speed Dosing

Precision agriculture requires variable dosing rates based on flow sensors. The dosing pump gearbox must be compatible with Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) or mechanical variators. Our gearboxes are rated for a wide speed range (10Hz to 60Hz input), allowing the pump stroking rate to be adjusted linearly. This ensures that the concentration of fertilizer (ppm) remains constant even as the irrigation flow rate fluctuates.

Comparative Analysis: Electric vs. Hydraulic Filter Drives

Feature Electric Gearbox Drive (HW Series) Hydraulic Turbine Drive
Control Precise (Electronic) Flow Dependent
Water Waste Zero (External Power) High (Uses water to drive piston)
Reliability High (Sealed Unit) Medium (Seals wear out)
Torque Consistent (Gear Reduction) Varies with Pressure
Cost Higher Initial Lower Initial

Localized Application: Global Agriculture

Greenhouses (Netherlands/Spain)

In high-tech hydroponic greenhouses, nutrient delivery must be exact. Gearbox-driven dosing pumps are the standard. Our low-backlash Helical-Bevel Gearboxes allow for dosing accuracy within ±1%, ensuring that high-value crops like tomatoes and peppers receive the exact NPK mix required.

Open Field Drip (Israel/California)

For open-field drip irrigation on almonds and grapes, source water often comes from canals laden with algae and silt. Automatic screen filters run cleaning cycles every 15 minutes. Our Heavy-Duty Worm Gearboxes are built to withstand this high cycle rate (thousands of starts/stops per season) without overheating or gear wear.

📒 Field Engineer’s Log: The “Stuck” Scanner

“September 2025, Central Valley, California. A vineyard manager reported his primary screen filter was clogging. The cleaning motor was humming but the scanner wasn’t turning.”

“We found the original gearbox (a cheap plastic unit) had stripped its gears. The heavy algae load had created too much drag for the nylon gears.

Solution: We retrofitted the filter with our HW-40 Aluminum Worm Gearbox with a bronze gear and steel shaft. We also upgraded the motor to a higher torque DC unit. The metal gears easily powered through the heavy algae cake, restoring the cleaning cycle efficiency. The filter differential pressure dropped immediately, restoring full flow to the drip lines.”

Frequently Asked Questions (OEM/B2B)

1. Can I use a standard industrial gearbox?

Technically yes, but standard boxes aren’t sealed for the “wet room” environment of a headworks shed. Our HW-Series features Stainless Steel Shafts and epoxy paint to prevent rust from fertilizer vapors and water spray.

2. What motor voltages are available?

For remote sites, we offer 12V and 24V DC motors. For grid-connected pump stations, we supply 110V/220V Single Phase or 230V/460V 3-Phase motors. All are NEMA or IEC standard mounts.

3. Are these gearboxes self-locking?

Yes. The worm gear design (usually ratios 30:1 and higher) is self-locking. This is beneficial for positioning valves or scanners, as they will hold their position when power is cut without needing a brake.

4. Can I get a hollow output shaft?

Yes. Most of our HW-Series gearboxes for filter drives come with a Hollow Output Shaft. This allows the scanner shaft to pass through, simplifying the mounting and alignment process.
